Energia-Buran Soviet Space Shuttle Last Updated - 3 March 2008 |
![]() | The Soviet Space Shuttle dates back to the 1960's when chief designer Sergei Korolov considered the idea of a reusable space-plane. Buran, meaning "snowstorm" or "blizzed", is the same size and remarkably similar in appearance to the NASA Space Shuttle. On the 15th November 1988, the Buran Space Shuttle was launched by an Energia rocket on her maiden orbital spaceflight, unmanned, and landed with excellent results having performed flawlessly. Unfortunately the programme was then cancelled and Buran has never flown again since. |
