This is a real rare piece of NASA Gemini hardware. This "venous pressure cuff" was custom made and fitted for NASA astronaut Michael Collins; back-up in the Gemini 7 mission. Had the back-up crew flown this mission then this very cuff would have been worn by Collins throughout the majority of the mission !!! Still vacuum sealed and in it's original NASA condition, it bears the markings "Venous Pressure Cuff. Pressure Suit Assembly. NASA Designation GVPC-5C. Size: Collins. October 1965" plus manufacturers details and unique serial/part numbers. Both cuffs are sealed in this package; one for the left leg and one for the right leg, along with the tubing to connect them. Includes original NASA printed "Buy-Off" documentation (in a very aged and fragile condition which adds to assert the authenticity of this rare Gemini relic) and dated I.D. Card. A unique, one-off piece of early space history. Certainly an item for the discerning showcase collection !!! Micheal Collins later flew as pilot for the Gemini 10 mission in 1966, accompanied Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to the Moon as Command Module Pilot on Apollo 11. He left NASA in 1970 to become Director of the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum in Washington D.C.

Technical Information...
The cardiovascular system was the first major body system to show physiologic change following space flight. As a result, it was extensively investigated by various means during the Gemini missions. The purpose of the Cardiovascular Conditioning (M001) experiment was to determine the effectiveness of the pneumatic cuff technique in preventing orthostatic intolerance (feeling light-headed) during launch, spaceflight and landing. The venous pressure leg cuffs were tested to verify whether they would lessen post-flight orthostatic intolerance by stimulating venous circulation during spaceflight. The equipment that was flown on the Gemini 7 mission was almost identical to that used on the Gemini 5 mission. However, the cycling system was supplied with oxygen pressure from the spacecraft environmental control system.

The Venous Pressure Cuffs...
The pneumatic venous pressure cuffs consisted of a 3 by 6 inch bladder enclosed in a soft non-stretchable fabric. The bladder portion of each cuff was positioned on the dorsomedial aspect of each thigh. A lace adjuster that was used to ensure proper fit. Driven by a cycling system, the cuffs alternately inflated from 70 to 75 mm Hg for 2 out of every 6 minutes, applying pressure to the thighs of the subject.
