Skylab Space Station Launched
Crashed
14th May 1973
11th July 1979

Launched on the 14th May 1973, Skylab was the first United States space station. During its six years in space, the station carried three different three-person crews and was the location of nearly 300 different experiments. For a total of 171 days and 13 hours, crews conducted medical experiments on human adaptability to micro-gravity, solar observations, and detailed Earth resources experiments. These were performed with two goals in mind; (1) to prove that humans could live and work in space for extended periods of time and (2) to expand our knowledge of solar astronomy. On the 11th July 1979, after the last of its crews had left, Skylab reentered the Earth's atmosphere and broke apart, spreading debris over the Indian Ocean and Western Australia.
